Abstract

This experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of total phenols from Magnolia officinalis on growth performance, meat quality and antioxidant function of yellow-feathered broilers. A total of 360 one-day-old yellow-feather chickens were selected and randomly allocated to 5 groups with 6 replicates per group and 12 chickens per replicate. Broilers in the control group were fed a basal diet, those in the antibiotics group were fed the basal diet supplemented with 20 mg/kg colistin and 12 mg/kg flavomycin from 1 to 28 days of age and supplemented with 12 mg/kg flavomycin from 29 to 56 days of age, and those in the total phenols from Magnolia officinalis supplemental groups were fed the basal diets supplemented with 50, 150 and 250 mg/kg of total phenols from Magnolia officinalis, respectively. The experiment lasted for 56 days. The results showed as follows:1) from 29 to 56 days and 1 to 56 days of age, the average daily feed intake of yellow-feather broilers in the 50 mg/kg total phenols from Magnolia officinalis supplemental group was significantly higher than that in the antibiotic group (P<0.05), and the ratio of feed to gain of yellow-feather broilers showed a quadratic change with the increasing of total phenols from Magnolia officinalis supplemental level (P<0.05). 2) At 56 days of age, the breast muscle pH (45 min and 24 h) of yellow-feather broilers in 50 and 150 mg/kg total phenols from Magnolia officinalis supplemental group was significantly higher compared with the antibiotics group (P<0.05), and 45 min meat color which was redness in the breast muscle of yellow-feather broilers in 150 mg/kg of total phenols from Magnolia officinalis supplemental group was significantly higher than that in the other groups (P<0.05), while the drip loss (24 h) and water loss rate in the breast muscle of yellow-feather broilers in 150 mg/kg of total phenols from Magnolia officinalis supplemental group was significantly lower than that in the control group and antibiotics group (P<0.05). 3) At the age of 28 days, the activity of serum superoxide dismutase and catalase of yellow-feather broilers in 150 mg/kg total phenols from Magnolia officinalis supplemental group was not significantly different from that in the antibiotic group (P>0.05), and the serum SOD activity was significantly higher than that in the other groups (P<0.05). At the age of 56 days, the malondialdehyde content in the liver of yellow-feather broilers in 150 mg/kg total phenols from Magnolia officinalis supplemental group was significantly lower than that in the control group (P<0.05). In conclusion, dietary total phenols from Magnolia officinalis can enhance the growth performance, meat quality and antioxidant function of yellow-feather broilers. The recommended supplemental level of total phenols from Magnolia officinalis is 150 mg/kg.
