Abstract

This experiment was conducted to study the effects of increasing production rate of ruminal acetate and butyrate on their gastrointestinal absorption and passage. Six healthy Inner Mongolian semifine-wool wethers (1.5-old-year, similar body weight) fitted with a ruminal and a duodenum cannula were randomly divided into two groups (acetate infusion group and butyrate infusion group) with three sheep in each group. Each group set 3 treatments, each treatment was an infusion level of acetate/butyrate and a pulse-continuous infusion experiment. Rumen steady state was obtained by simulating continuous feeding, and non-isotope labeled acetate and butyrate solutions technology was used. The results showed as follows:1) ruminal pH and acetate fractional absorption rate decreased significantly (P<0.05) and ruminal acetate concentration, acetate absorption rate and acetate passage rate increased significantly (P<0.01) with increasing ruminal acetate production rate. Meanwhile, ruminal Co concentration, ruminal liquid hour dilution rate, ruminal liquid flow rate and liquid volume changed insignificantly with increasing ruminal acetate production rate (P>0.05). Except ruminal Co concentration decreased significantly (P<0.05) with increasing ruminal butyrate production rate, other indexes change were as the same as acetate infusion. 2) Acetate duodenum passage rate increased insignificantly (2.95 to 3.47 mmol/h) with increasing ruminal acetate production rate (P>0.05), the percentage of duodenum acetate entering hind-tract (5.68% to 3.35%) and acetate absorption percentage in the omasum and abomasum (94.32% to 96.65%) increased significantly (P<0.01) with increasing ruminal acetate production rate. In this study, increasing ruminal acetate and butyrate production rate in sheep increase ruminal concentration of acetate and butyrate, decrease ruminal pH, increase ruminal absorption rate of acetate and butyrate and passage rate in rumen and duodenum, and decrease ruminal absorption efficiency of acetate and butyrate.
