Abstract

This experiment was conducted to investigate the differences of element contents in serum and seminal plasma of Landrace boars with different semen quality characteristics, and analyze the effects of element contents in serum and seminal plasma on semen quality. Based on 1 402 semen quality records of 107 Landrace boars, boars were allocated into 3 groups according to semen utilization rate:low utilization group (utilization was less than 60%,n=21), medium utilization group (utilization was 60% to 80%,n=27) and high utilization group (utilization was more than 80%,n=59). Serum and seminal plasma samples of Landrace boars were collected, and nutrient and toxic element contents in serum and seminal plasma were analyzed using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The results showed as follows:1) functional sperm number and sperm motility of Landrace boars in low utilization group were significantly lower than those in middle and high utilization group (P<0.01), and abnormal sperm rate was significantly higher than that in middle and high utilization group (P<0.01). 2) There were no significant differences in serum and seminal plasma element contents of Landrace boars between different utilization groups (P>0.05). While seminal plasma lead (Pb) element content was significantly negatively correlated with sperm motility (P<0.05), and significantly positively correlated with abnormal sperm rate by correlation analysis between serum and seminal plasma element contents and semen quality parameters (P<0.05). 3) Further analysis of seminal plasma Pb element content grouping showed that abnormal sperm rate of Landrace boars as 0 μg/L seminal plasma Pb element content was significantly lower than that as >10.0 μg/L seminal plasma Pb element content (P<0.05), and abnormal sperm rate decreased about 6.11%. In conclusion, existence of seminal plasma toxic Pb element may affect semen quality by impairing sperm motility and morphology of Landrace boars.
