Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of dietary chlorine level on growth performance, hematological parameters and tibia growth of broilers. A total of 360 healthy Arbor Acres (AA) 1-day-old broiler chicks were randomly divided into 4 groups with 6 replicates in each group and 15 broilers per replicate. The chlorine levels of diets for 4 groups were 0.135%, 0.220%, 0.305% and 0.353%, respectively. The test period lasted for 42 days which was divided into three stages:the early stage (1 to 14 days of age), the middle stage (15 to 28 days of age) and the late stage (29 to 42 days of age). The results showed as follows:1) with the increase of dietary chlorine level, the average body weight of broilers at 14 days of age showed linear and quadratic changes (P<0.05). The average body weight of broilers at 14 days of age in the 0.353% chlorine group was significantly higher than that in the 0.220% chlorine group (P<0.05), the average daily gain was significantly higher than that in the 0.135% and 0.220% chlorine groups (P<0.05), and the average daily feed intake was significantly higher than that in the 0.220% and 0.305% chlorine groups (P<0.05). There were no significant differences in feed/gain and survival rate of broilers in the early, middle, late and whole stages among all groups (P>0.05). 2) The mean red blood cell volume (MCV) and the mean hemoglobin content of red blood cell (MCH) of 42-day-old broilers showed linear and quadratic changes with the increase of dietary chlorine level (P<0.05), and the MCV and MCH in the 0.353% chlorine group were significantly lower than those in the other groups (P<0.05). 3) There were no significant effects of dietary chlorine level on blood-gas parameters (P>0.05). 4) Dietary chlorine level had no significant effects on blood potassium ion (K+), sodion (Na+) and chloridion (Cl-) concentrations at 28 and 42 days of age (P>0.05). 5) Tibia weight and length of broilers decreased linearly with the increase of dietary chlorine level (P<0.05). The tibia length of broilers in the 0.135% chlorine group was significantly higher than that in the other groups (P<0.05). Thus, the higher dietary chlorine level (0.353%) can improve the growth performance of broilers at the early stage (1 to 14 days of age), but 0.135% chlorine level is beneficial to erythrocyte maintain the normal status and tibia growth of broilers.
