Abstract

The better development of mammalian mammary gland is a prerequisite for its full play of lactation. The development of mammalian mammary gland after birth occurs in several different stages, including puberty, pregnancy, lactation and involution. The mammary gland development is not only affected by genetic, hormonal and environmental factors, but also regulated by nutrition. Studies show that fatty acids can not only provide energy for life activities, but also many signal molecules formed by their biosynthesis participate in regulation of mammary gland development. In this review, mammary gland development process of mice and pigs and its influence factors, as well as regulation of fatty acids on the mammary gland development were summarized, and possible mechanism involved in regulation on mammary gland development of mice and pigs by fatty acids were discussed, to provide a theoretical basis for application of fatty acids in regulating animal mammary gland development and improving animal lactation performance.
