Abstract

Various kinds of endocrine cells constitute the "gastrointestinal endocrine system" in animal gastrointestinal tract. Dietary proteins are degraded into amino acids and sensed by amino acid sensing receptors on the membrane of endocrine cells. Therefore, it can mediate the secretion of hormones and regulate the physiological functions of the gastrointestinal tract. Amino acid transporters, located in intestinal epithelial cells, regulate amino acid metabolism through the mammalian target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1) and the general control nonderepressible 2 (GCN2) signaling pathways. In this review, we summarize the progress of animal gastrointestinal endocrine system, amino acid sensing receptors, transporters and signaling pathways.
