Abstract

The purpose of this experiment was to study the effects of capsaicin on intake, milk performance and serum biochemical indexes of heat stressed dairy cows. Forty Holstein cows with similar age, parity, day in milk and milk yield were randomly divided into control group and experimental group with 20 cows in each group. The control group was fed the formula diet of the original dairy, and the experimental group was added 1.2 g/d capsaicin. The pre-feeding period was 7 days and the experimental period was 2 months. The temperature and humidity index of the cowshed were recorded every day; the amount of feed and leftover every day was recorded, the dry matter content was determined, and the dry matter intake was calculated. The rectal temperature of experimental cows was measured every week; on the 1, 15, 30, 45 and 60 days of the experiment, the milk yield was recorded and milk samples were collected to determine the milk composition; on the 1 and 60 days of the experiment, 10 mL of blood was collected from the tail root, and the supernatant was taken after centrifugation to determine serum biochemical indexes. The results showed that capsaicin could alleviated the rectal temperature rise, promoted the intake of milk (P<0.05), decreased the milk somatic cell number. However, capsaicin had no significant effect on milk yield, milk fat rate, milk lactose rate, milk protein rate (P>0.05). In addition, capsaicin could reduce the serum creatine phosphokinase activity, cortisol and malondialdehyde contents (P<0.05), but had no significant effect on the activities of serum glutathione peroxidase and superoxide dismutase (P>0.05). All in all, adding capsaicin in diets in summer heat stress can promote the intake and is beneficial to improve serum biochemical indexes of dairy cows, but it has no significant effect on the milk performance.
