Meta-Analysis of Effects of Intensive Liquid Feed Allowance on Performance of Calves

Abstract

In this study, the Meta-analysis was used to evaluate the effect of intensive liquid feed allowance on solid feed intake, average daily gain and final body weight of calves during weaning process. A total of 25 articles included 46 controlled studies were chosen after screening, and total of 785 calves in the intensive group and 789 calves in the control group were collected. The regression analysis was used to explore the source of heterogeneity, sensitivity analysis was used to assess the stability of results and funnel plots were used to evaluate the publication bias. The Meta-analysis results showed that intensive liquid feed allowance significantly reduced the solid feed intake before weaning (P<0.05), significantly increased the average daily gain of calves before weaning (P<0.05), and there was no significant differences in solid feed intake and average daily gain after weaning (P>0.05). Intensive liquid feed allowance significantly increased the weaned body weight and final body weight of calves (P<0.05). The sensitivity analysis showed that the analysis results were stable and reliable, and funnel plot analysis showed little publication bias in this study. In conclusion, intensive liquid feed allowance can promote rapid growth of calves before weaning, which has a potential positive effect on improving performance of calves. This Meta-analysis provide scientific basis for early nutrition management, techniques of calves breeding and early nutrition regulation of calves.
