Abstract

The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of active dry yeast on growth performance and serum biochemical, antioxidant and immune indexes of calves. Fifty calves (Simmental crossbred cattle×yak cattle ♀) with similar birthday were selected and randomly divided into control group [(13.28±1.25) kg] and yeast group [(13.10±1.22) kg], each group contained 25 replicates and 1 calf per replicate. During the 90-day experiment period, calves in 2 groups were fed milk replacer, and yeast group were added 2 g/d active dry yeast per head based on milk replacer. After 10 days of age, calves in 2 groups were free feeding the starter. The results showed as follows: 1) the average daily gain during days 1 to 90 of yeast group was significantly higher than that of the control group (P<0.05), and the average daily feed intake during days 61 to 90 was significantly higher than that of the control group (P<0.05). 2) On days 60 and 90, the serum alkaline phosphatase activity of yeast group was significantly lower than that of the control group (P<0.05). 3) On days 30, 60 and 90, the serum superoxide dismutase activity of yeast group was significantly higher than that of the control group (P<0.05). 4) On days 30 and 60, the serum immunoglobulin G content of yeast group was significantly higher than that of the control group (P<0.05). 5) On day 30, the contents of interleukin-10 and tumor necrosis factor-α in serum of yeast group were significantly higher than those of the control group (P<0.05); On day 60, the serum interleukin-2 content of yeast group was significantly higher than that of the control group (P<0.02); on day 90, the contents of interleukin-2, interferon-γ and tumor necrosis factor-α in serum were significantly higher than those of the control group (P<0.05). In conclusion, active dry yeast supplement in milk replacer can improve the average daily weight gain, antioxidant capacity and immune function of calves.
