Abstract

Fetus compression, dry matter intake decreases, hormonal level and metabolism changes result in increasing negative energy balance (NEB) of dairy cows during transition period. Lipid mobilization leads to the increase of oxidation products and the imbalance between oxidation and anti-oxidation, which causes oxidative stress easily. Physiological changes of dairy cows during transition period relate to the performance of the next lactation period, proper nutrition regulation can improve the NEB of dairy cows, relieve oxidative stress. As a precursor of the coenzyme Ⅰ nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) and coenzyme Ⅱ nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADP+), nicotinamide involve in oxidative stress pathway and plays an important role in regulating glucose and lipid metabolism and relieving oxidative stress. In this review, we summarized recent studies about the changes of dairy cow physiology during the transition period and how nicotinamide regulated the oxidative stress, aiming to provide reliable ways for health of periparturient dairy cows in production.
