Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of supplementary feeding guanidineacetic acid (GAA) on movement performance, glucose metabolism and antioxidant capacity of Yili horses. Twenty Yili horses aged 2 to 3 years old, similar in weight (373.20±30.53) kg, and rigorously trained for speed races, were randomly divided into 4 groups and with 5 horses (3♀+2) in each group, and the training intensity were consistent. Each horse was fed 4 kg of concentrate supplements per day, and freely collected dry herbage. On this basis, each horse in each group was fed 0 (CON group), 25 (25 GAA group), 50 (50 GAA group) and 75 mg/kg GAA (75 GAA group) every day for an 8-week trial. On the 47th day of the trial, a 2 000 m speed race was performed, and blood and urine samples were collected. The results showed as follows:1) supplementation of GAA acid can shorten the time of 2 000 m race in Yili horses. 2) The contents of plasma GAA, creatine and creatinine in 50 GAA group were significantly higher than those in CON group immediately after competition (P<0.05). Plasma creatine kinase activity in 50 GAA and 75 GAA groups was significantly higher than that in CON group immediately after competition (P<0.01). The urine creatinine excretion in all experimental groups was significantly higher than that in CON group (P<0.01). 3) The plasma insulin content in each experimental group was significantly higher than that in CON group at 2 h before, immediately and 2 h after competition (P<0.05). The contents of plasma glucose and lactic acid in each experimental group at 2 h before, immediately and 2 h after the competition were significantly lower than those in the CON group (P<0.05). 4) The activities of plasma total antioxidant capacity, glutathione peroxidase and superoxide dismutase in all experimental groups were significantly higher than those in CON group at 2 h before and 2 h after competition (P<0.05). Under the conditions of this experiment, GAA supplementation increase the content of plasma creatine metabolites, the ability of antioxidation and the performance of 2000 m speed race, and promote the energy supply of glucose metabolism to exercise. Therefore, GAA can be used as a nutritional regulator to relieve exercise fatigue or promote fatigue recovery of sports horses. The best supplementation level of GAA is 50 mg/kg per horse.
