Abstract

Bile salt hydrolase (BSH) is a kind of intestinal microbial metabolite with degradation function on conjugated bile salt, mediating the transformation of primary bile acids from liver to secondary bile acids derived from intestinal microbial metabolites. In recent years, it has been found that BSH plays important roles in regulating both intestinal microflora and host physiological metabolism. On the one hand, BSH promote the survive and colonization of microorganisms in the gut; on the other hand, BSH is involved in regulating host lipids metabolism and gut healthy based on bile acid metabolism. This review briefly introduced the research progress on structure, distribution, biological function of microbial BSH and its inhibitors, which may provide reference for the comprehensive understanding of BSH function and its application in animal husbandry.
