Abstract

This experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of dietary crude protein (CP) level during 8 to 18 weeks of age on growth performance and the development of carcass, internal organ, comb, bone, digestive tract and reproductive organ of Rugao yellow chickens before laying (8 to 20 weeks of age). Six hundred 8-week-old Rugao yellow chickens with good condition and similar body weight were assigned to 5 groups with 8 replicates per group and 15 hens per replicate. During 8 to 18 weeks of age, chickens were fed five experimental diets with the same metabolizable energy level and CP levels of 14.00%, 14.75%, 15.50%, 16.25% and 17.00%, respectively; during 19 to 20 weeks of age, chickens were fed an expected diet with the same nutrient level. The trial period lasted for 12 weeks (8 to 20 weeks of age). The results showed as follows:1) with the dietary CP level increased, the body weight at 18 weeks of age and the average daily gain (ADG) during 8 to 18 weeks of age were decreased significantly linearly (P<0.05), and the average daily crude protein intake (ADCPI), the ratio of crude protein to gain (CPCR), the ratio of metabolizable energy to gain (MECR) and the ratio of feed to gain (F/G) during 8 to 18 weeks of age and the ADCPI and CPCR during 8 to 20 weeks of age were increased significantly linearly (P<0.05). 2) The ovary stroma weight at 18 weeks of age of dietary 14.75% CP level group was significantly higher than that of dietary 14.00%, 15.50% and 17.00% CP level groups (P<0.05). 3) Except for the foot percentage and proventriculus relative weight, dietary CP level had no significant effects on the development indexes of carcass, internal organ, comb, femur, tibia, digestive tract and reproductive organ at 18 and 20 weeks of age (P>0.05). In conclusion, when the dietary CP level is 14.75% during 8 to 18 weeks of age, it can increase the body weight of hens at 18 weeks of age and the ADG of hens during 8 to 18 weeks of age, improve the F/G, CPCR and MECR of hens during 8 to 18 weeks of age, promote ovary stroma development, and dietary CP level have no significant effects on the indexes of growth performance and development at the initiation of the laying period (20 weeks of age) except the foot percentage and proventriculus relative weight.
