Abstract

This experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of dietary iron supplemental levels on growth performance, antioxidant ability and slaughter performance of yellow-feathered broilers, and to provide reference for rational utilization of iron preparation in yellow-feathered broilers production. A total of 400 yellow-feathered male chicks of one-day-old were randomly divided into 5 groups with 8 replicates per group and 10 chicks per replicate. Dietary iron supplemental levels in five groups were 0 (control), 20, 80, 320 and 1 280 mg/kg, respectively. The experiment lasted for 63 days and was divided into 3 stages of 1 to 21 days of age, 22 to 42 days of age and 43 to 63 days of age. The results showed as follows:1) the average daily gain (ADG) and average daily feed intake (ADFI) of yellow-feathered broilers at all stages were linearly decreased with dietary iron supplemental level increasing (P<0.05), and the ADG (except the control group from 22 to 42 days of age) and ADFI in 1 280 mg/kg supplemental group were significantly lower than those in the other groups (P<0.05). However, compared with the control group, dietary 20 mg/kg iron significantly increased the ADG from 1 to 21 days of age (P<0.05). Dietary iron supplemental levels had no significant effects on the feed to gain ratio (F/G) and mortality rate at all stages (P>0.05). 2) The glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) and total superoxide dismutase (T-SOD) activities in plasma and liver of 63-day-old yellow-feathered broilers were not affected by dietary iron supplemental levels (P>0.05), but the malondialdehyde (MDA) content in plasma and liver was linearly increased with dietary iron supplemental level increasing (P<0.05). When the iron supplemental level was increased to 1 280 mg/kg, the MDA content in plasma and liver was significantly higher than that in the other groups except 320 mg/kg supplemental group (P<0.05). 3) Dietary iron supplemental levels had no significant effects on the dressing percentage, eviscerating percentage, breast muscle percentage and leg muscle percentage of 63-day-old yellow-feathered broilers (P>0.05). However, the abdominal fat percentage was linearly decreased with dietary iron supplemental level increasing (P<0.05), and when the iron supplemental level was increased to 80 mg/kg or above, the abdominal fat percentage was significantly decreased compared with the control group (P<0.05). In conclusion, the high iron diet can reduce the growth performance, antioxidant ability and abdominal fat deposition of yellow-feathered broilers.
