Abstract

This study was conducted to investigate the effects of ramie and alfalfa combination on rumen fermentation evaluated by simulated rumen fermentation in vitro, and to provide data reference for rational application of ramie and alfalfa in animal husbandry. Ramie and alfalfa were composed of nine fermentation substrates according to different dry matter ratios (10:90, 20:80, 30:70, 40:60, 50:50, 60:40, 70:30, 80:20 and 90:10). Three Xiangdong black goats equipped with permanent rumen fistulas, and were selected as rumen fluid donors to conduct 48 h in vitro rumen fermentation. The results showed that the gas production and methane production per gram of substrate, gas production and methane production per gram of degraded substrate, gas production rate, initial substrate degradation rate and dry matter degradation rate were linearly decreased (P<0.05) with the increase of the proportion of ramie. Dry matter degradation rate was significantly decreased when ramie proportion was over than 30% (P<0.05); gas production, gas production rate and methane production in vitro fermentation were significantly decreased when ramie proportion was over than 40% (P<0.05). Total volatile fatty acid concentration, propionate and butyrate proportion were linearly decreased with the ramie proportion increasing (P<0.05), while the acetate proportion and acetate to propionate ratio were linearly increased with the ramie proportion increasing (P<0.05). Total volatile fatty acid concentration was significantly decreased when ramie proportion was over than 40% (P<0.05). In conclusion, when the proportion of ramie is less than 20%, ramie has less effect on rumen fermentation parameters in vitro, and has inhibitory effects on methanogenesis. It is suggested that the proportion of ramie replacing alfalfa feeding ruminants should not exceed 20% in production.
