Abstract

The integrity of rumen epithelial barrier function is very important for the maintenance of digestive tract immunity and body health of ruminants. Disturbance of rumen environmental homeostasis, such as the increased release of bacterial endotoxin, can lead to the injury of rumen epithelial barrier function. The benefits of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) in maintaining gastrointestinal immune homeostasis have been demonstrated in numerous medical studies. As a natural metabolite in the rumen, the potential role of CLA in regulating the rumen epithelial barrier function has not been thoroughly studied. Therefore, according to the reported protective effect of CLA on gastrointestinal barrier function, this review summarized the harmful effects of ruminal epithelial barrier function injury, and the possible biological mechanisms of CLA on ruminal epithelial barrier, which can provide more theoretical basis for its application in ruminant healthy breeding.
