Abstract

The purpose of this experiment was to investigate the effects of dietary Clostridium butyricum (C. butyricum) on growth performance and rectal microflora of fattening goats. A total of 16 healthy 6-month-old male Albas goats with similar body weight of (22.00±2.09) kg were selected and randomly divided into 2 groups with 8 replicates per group, and 1 goat per replicate: the control group was fed a basal diet (concentrate to forage ratio = 65:35); the C. butyricum group was fed the basal diet+2.0×108 CFU/kg C. butyricum (≥1.0×109 CFU/g). The pre-feeding period was 14 days, and the experimental period was 56 days. The results showed that compared with the control group, the supplementation of C. butyricum to the diet had no significant effects on the growth performance, nutrient apparent digestibility and nitrogen metabolism of fattening goats (P>0.05), but adding C. butyricum could significantly increase plasma glucose (GLU) and total cholesterol (TC), high-density lipoprotein (HDL) and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) contents (P<0.05). The activity of aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and the contents of total protein (TP) and globulin (GLB) in plasma showed an increasing trend (0.05<P<0.10). Compared with the control group, the relative abundance of Christensenaceae _R-7_group in the rectum of fattening goats fed with C. butyricum was significantly increased (P<0.05), while the relative abundance of Ruminobacteriaceae _UCG-014 was significantly decreased (P<0.05). The relative abundance of Clostridium in the rectum showed a decreasing trend (0.05<P<0.10), while the relative abundance of Campylobacter showed an increasing trend (0.05<P<0.10). In conclusion, high-concentrate diets supplementation with C. butyricum can increase the contents of GLU and HDL in goat plasma, and improve the rectal microflora structure by up-regulating the relative abundance of beneficial bacteria, but there is no significant effect on the growth performance of fattening goats.
