Abstract

Creatine, also known as N-methylguanidine acetic acid, is an amino acid derivative synthesized from arginine, glycine and methionine in vertebrates, which has been used in food, medicine and other fields, due to its biological functions such as improving energy metabolism, promoting muscle cell development, and inhibiting oxidation reaction. Many previous studies have shown that exogenous creatine supplements in diets not only promoted poultry growth, but also increased the reserve of skeletal muscle energy substances, delayed post-slaughter glycolysis, and improved meat quality. Therefore, creatine supplements have a good application prospect in the production of high-quality poultry meat. This review introduced the physical and chemical characteristics, metabolic pathways and biological functions of four different forms of creatine supplements, including creatine monohydrate, guanidinoacetic acid, pyruvate creatine and creatine nitrate, and summarized the research progress of these creatine supplements in the production practice of broilers, ducks and geese, and also pointed out the existing problems and future research directions in the research and application of creatine supplements, which will provide a theoretical basis for the development of new feed additives and the production of high-quality poultry meat.
