Abstract

Methane emitted by ruminants during ruminant production not only exacerbates global greenhouse effect, but also causes energy loss of 2% to 12% in ruminants, thereby decreases the rate of feed utilization. In recent years, large-sized seaweed, as a new feed resource, has attracted widespread attention for its ability to alleviate methane emission of ruminants. This paper reviewed the relevant research progress of the nutrition ingredients of large-sized seaweed, the effectiveness of various large-sized seaweeds on reducing methane emission, the main bioactive substances in large-sized seaweed to mitigate methane emission and their mechanism, etc., in order to provide some references for the use of large-sized seaweed to alleviate methane emission of ruminants.
