Abstract

Rumen, as a unique digestion and metabolism organ of ruminants, can efficiently degrade plant fiber and conduct energy metabolism and transformation, and provide high-value protein food sources for human. The efficient conversion and utilization of nutrients in the rumen are of great significance for improving feed efficiency and also solving the problem of food competition between humans and livestock. In recent years, it makes great progress on the field of rumen nutrition and physiology research. In this paper, the concept of animal gastrointestinal nutrition, the establishment and maintenance of rumen homeostasis in ruminants, ruminal microbial-host interaction and relationship between rumen nutrition physiology and efficient and healthy ruminant production are reviewed. It is expected to provide some references for colleagues in the field of ruminant gastrointestinal nutrition research.
