Abstract

The aim of this study was to compare the effect of zinc oxide with two different processing technologies on growth performance, diarrhea rate, serum parameters, nutrient digestibility, utilization efficiency of copper, iron and zinc elements and volatile fatty acid composition in feces of weaned piglets. Eighty-four weaned piglets with the initial body weight of (8.25±0.25) kg were randomly divided into 3 groups, they are control group (basal diet), coated zinc oxide group (basal diet+1 500 mg/kg zinc from coated zinc oxide) and clathrate zinc oxide group (basal diet+1 500 mg/kg zinc from clathrate zinc oxide). There were 4 replicates in each group and 7 pigs in each replicate. The experiment lasted for 14 d. The results showed as follows: compared with the control group, diet supplemented with coated zinc oxide or clathrate zinc oxide both significantly increased the average daily feed intake (ADFI) and serum glucose (GLU) content of weaned piglets (P < 0.05), but reduced the digestibility of crude protein (P < 0.05), and had no significant effects on the average daily gain (ADG) and feed ∶ gain (F ∶ G) (P>0.05); diet supplemented with clathrate zinc oxide also significantly reduced the diarrhea rate and diarrhea score of weaned piglets (P < 0.05), and significantly improved the serum superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity and the digestibility of crude fiber (P < 0.05); in addition, diet supplemented with coated zinc oxide or clathrate zinc oxide significantly increased the contents of butyric acid, valeric acid and total volatile fatty acids in feces of weaned piglets (P < 0.05), and significantly decreased the copper and iron contents in feces of weaned piglets (P < 0.05). In conclusion, the addition of zinc oxide in diets with two different processing techniques both can reduce diarrhea rate and improve antioxidant ability, nutrient digestibility, copper and iron utilization efficiency and volatile fatty acid composition in feces of weaned piglets, and the anti-diarrhea effect of clathrate zinc oxide was better than that of coated zinc oxide.
