Abstract

Short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) are one of the intestinal microbial metabolites and play an important role in maintaining tight junctions (TJ) between intestinal epithelial cells. SCFAs as a ligand for G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) can enhance the integrity of TJ between intestinal epithelial cells by regulating inflammasome and adenosine monophosphate activated protein kinase (AMPK) signaling pathways. This article reviews the effect and mechanism of SCFAs on intestinal epithelial TJ.
