Abstract

The experiment was aimed to study the effects of specific surface area of corn straw on nutrient degradation and rumen microbial adhesion. Three Liuyang black goats with permanent rumen fistulas were taken as experimental animals. The rumen degradation characteristics and composition of rumen microbial adhesion to corn straw after fermentation of two kinds of specific surface area (0.664 and 1.135 m2/g) were studied by nylon bag experiment. The results showed that the increasing specific surface area of corn straw increased significantly the rapid degradation of dry matter (DM)(P<0.05), and significantly increased the rapid degradation of crude protein (CP) and the effective degradation rate of DM, neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and CP (P<0.01). Increasing the specific surface area of corn straw could significantly increase the adhesion number of Ruminococcus albus, Selenomonas ruminantium, Ruminobacter amylophilus (P<0.05), and significantly reduce the adhesion number of Fibrobacter succinogenes (P<0.05). Increasing the specific surface area of corn straw significantly decreased the Chao1 index (P<0.01), and significantly increased the relative abundances of Succiniclasticun and Streptococcus (P<0.05), and significantly decreased the Fibrobacter, Treponema, Saccharofermenta and Ruminobacter (P<0.05). In summary, increasing the specific surface area does not affect the types of bacteria that adhere to the surface of the corn straw, but it will increase the number of rumen functional microorganisms, change the relative abundance of microorganisms, and effectively improve the rumen degradation rate of nutrients.
