Energy utilization efficiency is a key trait affecting resource utilization efficacy and economic benefits in animal husbandry. It is jointly regulated by host genes and rumen microbiota, which mediate core physiological processes such as feed degradation, nutrient absorption and energy metabolism in dairy cows by constructing a cascade regulatory axis of “host genes-rumen microbiota-metabolites”. This review summarizes the regulatory mechanisms of host genes, rumen microbiota and their interaction on energy utilization efficiency in dairy cows, aiming to provide theoretical support for precision feeding strategies based on genomic selection and targeted microbial intervention, and promote the efficient utilization of feed resources and the sustainable development of animal husbandry.
Key words: energy utilization efficiency; host genes; rumen microbiota; interaction; dairy cows
