In this study, the effects of pellet diets with different levels of crude protein (CP) and lysine (Lys) on growth performance of Wusuli racoon dogs during the growing period were investigated. A 3 [CP: 18% (P1), 21% (P2) and 24% (P3)]×3 [Lys: 1.6% (L1), 1.8% (L2) and 2.0% (L3)] design of two-factor cross-over feeding trial was conducted on 72 young racoon dogs which were divided into 9 treatments with 9 replicates in each treatment and 1 racoon dog per replicate. The trial lasted for 14 weeks. The results showed as follows: at week 8 and week 12, the average body weight of P3 level was significantly higher than that of P1 level (P<0.05). At week 14, the average body weight of P3 level was significantly higher than that of P2 (P<0.05) and P1 levels (P<0.01). The total gain weight of P3 level was significantly higher than that of P2 (P<0.05) and P1 levels (P<0.01). At week 12 and week 14, the average body length of P2 and P3 levels was significantly higher than that of P1 level (P<0.05). No significant difference of average body length was found between P2 and P3 levels (P>0.05). The average body weight, total weight gain, average body length and total increase of body length were not significantly affected by Lys levels during the whole trial period (P>0.05). In conclusion, for the growing period of Wusuli racoon dogs, the optimal level of diet CP is 24% when considering body weight as main target; the better levels of diet CP are 21%~24% when considering body length as main target; 1.6% Lys in diets can meet the Lys requirement of Wusuli racoon dogs during the growing period.[Chinese Journal of Animal Nutrition, 2010,22(5):1407-1412]
